Sir Rod Stewart, 73, looks smitten as he plants a kiss on wife Penny Lancaster, 47, during romantic lunch in Rome

They have been together for a whopping nineteen years, and tied the knot back in 2007.

But Sir Rod Stewart, 73, and his wife Penny Lancaster, 47, looked more loved-up than ever on Thursday, as they enjoyed a romantic lunch date together while on holiday in Rome.

The pair were seen putting on an affectionate display as they tucked into a delicious Italian meal in the historic capital.

The rock legend looked absolutely besotted with his partner as he rested his head on her shoulder, before planting a smooch on her cheek.

Showcasing his signature eccentric style, the Forever Young hitmaker donned a cream blazer and a red patterned neckerchief.

Penny maintained her sophisticated appearance as she wore a purple and red dress and accessorised with oversized sunglasses.

The pair have been on a string of dates during their Italian getaway, as the couple enjoyed a cosy dinner on Wednesday.

The model was sure to glam up for their evening in a chic bardot blouse, teamed with a flowing pleated midi skirt and black heeled sandals.

Meanwhile her husband, in his typically bold style, slipped into an eye-catching floral blazer and pale blue chinos as he led his wife to the restaurant by the hand.

Proving to be stronger than ever, Penny was spotted sweetly caressing her husband's face at their table, as they happily chatted over a few drinks.

After their romantic dinner, the pair then treated themselves to an ice-cream nearby - and happily snapped selfies with fans on the way back to their hotel.

Penny and Rod have enjoyed a jam-packed holiday in Italy so far, and even had the chance to meet The Pope on Tuesday.

The pair could not stop beaming as they joined members of the public in St Peter's Square, to get a glimpse of the head of the Catholic Church.

The couple, who married in 2007, have been together for almost twenty years, and share two children together - sons Alastair, 12, and Aiden, seven.

Sir Rod Stewart, 73, shares a smooch with wife Penny Lancaster, 47, as they sit down for lunch in Italy after meeting the Pope

They enjoyed a special meeting with his Holiness Pope Francis in St Peter's Square earlier in the day.

And Sir Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster put on a loved-up display on Tuesday as they sat down for lunch in Italy following their religious meeting.

The 73-year-old music legend and his 47-year-old spouse were seen sharing a cheeky smooch as they enjoyed a lunch of fish and wine in the Vladimir restaurant in Rome, before heading out for a spot of retail therapy in the city.

Penny oozed summer chic in a floral dress with contrasting prints as she joined her husband of ten years making some purchases in a glamorous Italian boutique, with onlookers saying they exited with a new toilet brush holder.

Meanwhile Rod showed off his ever-eclectic sense of style in a paisley-printed blazer and white shirt as the pair sat down for lunch in the cosy eatery, and even enjoyed a cheeky kiss or two over their wine.

The couple didn't hold back in packing on the PDA as they tucked into lunch, expressing their love for each other by sharing a cheeky smooch or two.

Happy: Showing off his ever-eclectic sense of style, Rod teamed a paisley-printed blazer with a white shirt and matching trousers

Glamorous: While Rod showed off his typical fashion sense, Penny oozed summer chic in a floral dress with contrasting prints, finishing her look with gold sandals and a nude bag

Penny showed off her ageless beauty by styling her blonde hair into simple beachy waves, flashing her summer tan by keeping her skin nearly makeup-free.

Toasting their glasses of white and rose wine the couple beamed as they enjoyed a break from the bustling city atmosphere.

Penny and Rod's outing came after they had the chance to meet The Pope in St Peter's Square, joining members of the public in waiting for the head of the Catholic Church to make an appearance.

Rod was mixing prints in a statement blazer and floral shirt, and his trademark blond locks were coiffed to perfection and he wore a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses as he waited patiently.

Beautiful Penny was dressed in all black, with a Gucci handbag slung across her body and wore sunglasses, like her rocker hitmaker.

The couple were seen pointing into the distance as they struggled to catch a glimpse of the Pope.

Earlier, Penny had posted a couple of pictures on Instagram, as the couple got ready for their big day.

One saw the couple in the Square, with Rod looking lovingly at Penny. She wrote: 'Waiting for the Pope to arrive.'

In another, the couple, who married in June 2007, wore matching ensembles as they sat on their balcony.

She wrote: 'When in Rome one makes the most of one's small balcony.'

The outing comes a month after Katy Perry and her 'darling' boyfriend Orlando Bloom met the Pope as they attended a charity conference at Vatican City.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Sir Rod Stewart, 73, admits he tried to protect his nose during years of drug abuse by taking anti-cold capsules laced with cocaine

Sir Rod Stewart admitted in his memoirs that he tried to protect his nose during his years of drug abuse by taking anti-cold capsules laced with cocaine — in the form of suppositories.

But now the 73-year-old singer complains that his nose is getting bigger and bigger as he ages. 'It's amazing how my nose has grown even more now,' he wails.

And it's not just the Maggie May crooner's hooter that's expanding: 'My beauty spot used to be smaller, but now it's this massive thing on my face.'

The toothy late Queen singer Freddie Mercury would be impressed. He is said to have once tried to form a supergroup with Elton John and Stewart called Hair, Nose & Teeth.

My family life: PENNY LANCASTER says the hardest part of her husband Rod Stewart's job is being away from her and his children

Penny Lancaster, 47, is a model, photographer and wife of rock star Sir Rod Stewart, 73. The couple live in Essex with sons Alastair, 12, and Aiden, seven.

Rock bands are often referred to as families and that's definitely the case with Rod – some of his current line-up have been with him for 25 years. But it's no substitute for being with real family – Rod says the hardest part of his job is being away from me and the kids.

Families these days are often far too busy to even sit around a table, and that's certainly true of extended families such as ours. So getting our lot together is always a mission but one I love to tackle, especially when Rod is on tour.

Just last month we managed to assemble all of his sons – Sean, 37, Liam, 23, Alastair and Aiden – in Vancouver, where Rod was performing.

Trips out on days when Rod is not playing a gig normally tick all the boxes. On one rainy day in Vancouver we headed to a bowling alley.

All was well until Rod dramatically slipped and fell. Initially the boys burst out laughing, thinking he was up to one of his pranks, but then Aiden shouted: 'Stop, Dad's hurt.' They then all ran to his rescue. Luckily it didn't effect Rod's performance on stage the next night.

Before the gig, the brothers frolicked about backstage, kicking balls up and down the corridors, while their father went through his warm-up routine in his dressing room – a leg massage from a personal trainer and a spin on a cycle machine.

Then the boys burst in, heading straight for Rod's warm-up mic for a rap. 'That's enough now boys, out please. Dad's got to work,' they were promptly told. 'Have a good show, Dad, love ya,' they replied in unison as they filed out.

After the show started, the crowd erupted with excitement as Rod took off his jacket. Liam and Sean watched from the side of the stage but their little brothers joined in Rod's traditional routine of kicking giant signed footballs into the audience.

Rod had pleaded that Aiden aim the balls high above the heads of the crowd, but his first attempt flew straight at a cameraman!

After the show finished and the curtain came down, celebrations began backstage with both families – the band and us – toasting the success of the tour.

How special this time spent together had been. There's certainly never a dull moment in the Stewart clan.
